HP Compaq Desktop PCs - Boot Time Becomes Excessively Long in Windows XP Environment

For systems not yet affected by the issue:
Update the AMT driver (

) to prevent the issue from occurring.
For systems already exhibiting the symptoms:
Update the AMT driver (1)
AND
Clear the registriry key (2)

Download and install the appropriate SoftPaq, below, to update the AMT driver and prevent future occurrence of the issue:

2. Clear the bloated registry key
For computers already exhibiting long boot times, the registry key must be cleared as follows:

how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you
modify the registry incorrectly.
HP strongly recommends that you back up the registry
before you modify it. Then, you can restore the registry if an issue
occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the
registry, click the following link to view the article in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base:

- Open a new document in
Notepad
(or other text editor)
- Paste the following text into the file:
[-HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Digest\Hosts]
[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Digest\Hosts]
- Save the file and change the extension from
.txt
to
.reg
- Double-click the .reg file to import it into the registry (this deletes and recreates the key)
